Beinn a Bheithir is made of two Munros known as the Ballachulish Horseshoe. These Munros are Sgorr Dhearg and Sgorr Dhonuill. They are the furthest west Munros in Glencoe overlooking Loch Lhinne to the west and Loch Leven to the North. Beinn a Bheithir is the best place to view the entire Glencoe Range uninterrupted, the views are fantastic. Beinn a Bheithir forms a horseshoe around a heavily forested area operated by Scottish Forestry Commission. It is very dense and route finding through the forest is tricky. There are a series of service roads but they dart off in all directions. For most the ascent will start by making your way through the forest and heading for the lowest point in the bealach joining the 2 Munros. From here both summits can be easily by climbed. There are fantastic scrambling opportunities on each of the ridges in particular on the summit ridge to Sgorr Dhonuill. There is limited parking available in South Ballachulish just past the hotel right at the start of the forestry plantations. Beinn a Bheithir is one of the classics of Scottish mountaineering and you will not go dissapointed with this one! |
