Lawers Hills

Sitting in a group to the north of Loch Tay these hills are higher than the surrounding munros especially Lawers which almost makes 4000ft. Lawers or the Tarmachans can be climbed from the (currently closed) visitor centre which at 450m makes a good start to gaining height. However the group of 5 forming the Lawers horseshoe make a fine longer day from Lawers Hotel where parking is now provided free of charge if you partake of the hotelís services afterwards which is a no brainer. The corrie above the visitors centre used to hold the snow well and was the first downhill ski area in Scotland with a small wooden hut which had to be walked up to and the eventual provision of a rope tow. This area was abandoned in favour of the current ski areas and a few years ago the ruined hut was removed completely. This is a popular area and the car park is often completely full. You will have to go very early to get the hills to yourself, but if you do you may be rewarded with inversion layers and be able get above the clouds on the top of Lawers. Indeed in the winter, Loch Tay often remains shrouded in mist all day with all the hills in bright sunshine. Take care on the steep road to the car park on icy early mornings.
