The usual approach to this hill is from Ben Vorlich down a steep descent, broad col and challenging ascent. There are various paths up the steep rocky ridge all of which work well but is also possible to take a direct scrambling route. The finish is very sudden bringing you onto the summit plateau a short walk from the main summit. See if you can find the 20 litres of water stored near the summit for next years Stuck a Chroin 5000 hill race but leave it there. Alternatively you can get to the col from Glen Ample or there is a broad grassy southern ridge which takes you up from the Callander area. For descent there is a steep gully near the rocky ridge or a broad grassy ridge back to Glen Ample. Also you can visit the high lochan a chroin trapped to the south of the summit. For a longer day include a traverse of the ridge leading south to Ben Each. This is the route of the hill race which has a total ascent of 5000ft from Strathyre to the top of the Stuc and back. Congratulations to Robbie Simpson who aced this in 2 hrs 15 mins this year in mist and a cold howling gale. |
